While a great deal of progress has been made in the field of neuroscience, our ability to treat neurological and psychiatric diseases remains limited. Critical unmet medical needs remain in almost every area of brain and nervous system disorders, including: Alzheimer's disease, addiction, anxiety, depression, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, obesity, chronic pain, sensory disorders, spinal cord injury, stroke, schizophrenia, sleep disorders, and Parkinson's disease. The national economic burden from these disorders is estimated at $1 trillion and is growing alarmingly due to an aging population.

Neuroscience researchers and entrepreneurs face tremendous challenges in developing and bringing new treatments to those in need. In particular, a "valley of death" looms between funding for basic research and funding for later-stage development and commercialization.  While neuroscientists are identifying encouraging new leads for treatment, far too often these nascent treatments languish without the expertise or funding to bring them to a stage where the risk is low enough and the development time short enough for private capital to invest.

The Neurotechnology Development Foundation, a recently-established 501(c)(3) nonprofit, intends to address these challenges by supporting the translation of basic research into treatments and cures for disorders of the brain and nervous system. The Foundation plans to form an incubator and make grants to public and private researchers engaged in translational research for the purpose of bridging the gap between basic research and the development of new treatments. The Neurotechnology Development Foundation also intends to engage in educational activities to raise public awareness of brain illnesses and treatments, to conduct conferences for scientists, entrepreneurs, and other stakeholders for the presentation and exchange of information on neurotechnology treatments.
